My winning submission for the BlogHer Voice of The Year 2013 was born of a writing prompt. It was a topic that I would have never written of, since I didn't consider it my strength - so I avoided it.
It was a character sketch, and character is something I typically gloss over, because it's hard for me and I don't know how to do it. Translation: painful.
But what beauty is born of overcoming doubt and pain. Especially the beauty of discovering what you have in you. There is so much that we can learn, but if we don't attempt things because of time, planning, no direction, insecurity, lack of support and community, we plod along, staying safe in our safety zone. Moral of the story here, I no longer avoid or fear writing about character, because I learned I can do it.
